FAIRFIELD, IOWA – May 15, 2026 – A bridge replacement project on Iowa 78, 3.4 miles west of Iowa 1, will require closing Iowa 78 between V-63 in Keokuk County and Iowa 1 to traffic beginning at 8 a.m. Tuesday, May 26, until Sept. 11, 2026, weather permitting, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Fairfield construction office.
When Iowa 78 is closed you will follow a marked detour route around the work zone using County Road V-63 in Keokuk and Jefferson counties, Jefferson County Road H-17, and Iowa 1.
The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
