ANKENY, Iowa – July 2, 2026 – If you drive on Interstate 35 between Ankeny and Ames, you need to be aware of overnight closures for north- and southbound traffic from Northeast 36th Street (Exit 94) up to U.S. 30 (Exit 111), according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Marshalltown construction office.

Southbound I-35 will be closed Monday, July 6 from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., weather permitting. 

When the interstate is closed, follow the marked detour route:

  1. Exit southbound I-35 at U.S. 30 (Exit 111).
  2. Travel west on U.S.30 to U.S. 69.
  3. Travel south on U.S.69 to Northeast 36th Street.
  4. Travel east on Northeast 36th Street to southbound I-35 (Exit 94).

Northbound I-35 will be closed Tuesday, July 7 from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., weather permitting.

When the interstate is closed, follow the marked detour route:

  1. Exit northbound I-35 at Northeast 36th Street (Exit 94).
  2. Travel west on Northeast 36th Street to U.S. 69.
  3. Travel north on U.S. 69 to U.S. 30 in Ames.
  4. Follow eastbound U.S. 30 detour route signs.
  5. Travel east on U.S. 30 to return to northbound I-35 (Exit 111).

The southbound I-80 rest area will be closed from 10 a.m. Monday, July 6 until 5 a.m. Tuesday, July 7. The northbound I-80 rest area will be closed from 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 7 until 5 a.m. Wednesday, July 8. 

Visit 511ia.org for current detour route information before traveling through this construction zone and pay attention to detour signs and message boards while driving.

The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
