NEW HAMPTON, Iowa – July 9, 2026 – Work on the U.S. 218 pavement reconstruction project between Janesville and Waverly continues. Drivers should expect a traffic pattern change on this section of the roadway beginning Monday, July 13, weather permitting, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s (DOT) New Hampton construction office.

Crews will begin the next stage of construction by shifting traffic into a two-way pattern in the existing northbound lanes of U.S. 218, meaning one lane of traffic will run in each direction on what is normally a one-way roadway. As construction progresses, drivers should expect several more traffic pattern changes.

Residents on the east side of the roadway will only be able to turn right to enter or exit their driveways; left turns will not be allowed. Some access roads will be closed during this stage so crews can finish building permanent frontage roads and ramps and paving the main road.

Additional signage will be in place to help direct traffic through the work zone. The project is scheduled to be completed by mid-December, weather permitting.

The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
