WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — Aug. 4, 2026 — If you travel on Interstate 35/80 between the Southwest Mixmaster and Hickman Road, be aware of several upcoming overnight closures that may slow your trip, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation's Grimes construction office.

Thursday, Aug. 6

Beginning at 10 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, northbound I-35/eastbound I-80 will be reduced to one lane overnight between the Southwest Mixmaster and Hickman Road while crews repair the roadway at Walnut Creek.

The following ramps will also be closed for approximately 2 to 3 hours:

  • Eastbound I-80 to northbound I-35/80
  • Northbound University Avenue on-ramp
  • Northbound Hickman Road off-ramp

The westbound I-235 ramp to I-35/80 will remain open; however, motorists must exit at University Avenue. Access to northbound I-35/80 will not be available from this ramp during the closure.

Sunday, Aug. 9, through Friday morning, Aug. 14

Beginning at 9 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 9, until 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 10, Hickman Road will be fully closed between the I-35/80 ramp terminals while crews place bridge girders.

The work will also require a double left-lane closure on southbound I-35/westbound I-80.

These overnight closures will continue each night through 5 a.m. Friday, Aug. 14. If weather delays occur, backup closure dates are scheduled for Aug. 16-20.
