EPWORTH, Iowa — Aug. 10, 2026 — If you travel on U.S. 20/U.S. 52 on the east end of Epworth you need to be aware of permanent traffic pattern changes that could affect your trip.
On Monday morning, Aug. 17, the Iowa Department of Transportation will permanently close the median at-grade intersection of U.S. 20/U.S. 52 and Bierman Road. The closure is intended to improve traffic flow, reduce conflicting turning movements and enhance safety for motorists. The City of Epworth and Dubuque County support the closure.
Crews will remove the inside left-turn lanes onto Bierman Road and add new signage. The roadway will be modified to allow only right-in and right-out turning movements. Median usage and left-turn movements will no longer be allowed at this intersection. The work is expected to take about two weeks, weather permitting.
The illustration below shows how the intersection will look once changes are made.
The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
