MASON CITY, Iowa – Aug. 11, 2026 – Work continues for the Iowa 122 reconstruction project between Monroe Avenue and Pierce Avenue in Mason City. Crews will be partially closing the Pierce Avenue intersection Monday, Aug. 17, weather permitting, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Mason City construction office.

Pierce Avenue traffic will not be able to cross Iowa 122 so the contractor can reconstruct the south half of the intersection.

Traffic will be limited to:

  • Westbound Iowa 122 traffic will be able to turn north onto Pierce Avenue
  • Southbound traffic on Pierce Avenue will be able to turn west onto Iowa 122.
  • Iowa 122 east- and westbound traffic will continue to be able to travel through the intersection.

During this closure, eastbound traffic will follow a marked detour route that is shown on the map below to reach Mercy Hospital and Clinic.

The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
