WATERLOO, Iowa – Aug. 12, 2026 – The Iowa Department of Transportation is wrapping up a feasibility study for the intersection of U.S. 63 and Black Hawk County Road C-57 north of Waterloo. Based on the results, staff will move forward with plans to design and build a reduced conflict intersection, or RCI, which is a configuration that reduces the number of points where vehicles could collide.
After hearing your concerns about this intersection, the DOT decided to move forward with the RCI. Studies show RCIs improve safety and reduce serious crashes. Funding is available for the RCI, so work can move forward quickly and deliver safety benefits sooner.
Staff will begin design work immediately and plan to start construction in spring 2028. Once the RCI is built, Iowa DOT will continue to monitor the intersection to make sure it operates safely.
