Overnight closures around the Southwest Mixmaster begin Tuesday, Sept. 1

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – Aug. 25, 2026 – If you drive on Interstate 35, I-80, and I-235 around the Southwest Mixmaster, you need to be aware of overnight road and ramp closures that may slow down your trip, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s District 1 Office. 

To perform asphalt overlay work around the Southwest Mixmaster, the following closures are planned:

Tuesday, Sept. 1

  • Overnight full closure of southbound I-35/I-80 between University Avenue and Southwest Mixmaster
  • Detour route utilizes westbound University Avenue and Jordan Creek Parkway
  • Includes closure of ramp from westbound I-235 to southbound I-35 
  • Closure runs from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m.

Wednesday, Sept. 2

  • Southbound University on-ramp closed from 9 p.m.to 5 a.m.
  • Southbound I-35/I-80 to Westbound I-80 ramp closed from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m.
  • Westbound I-235 to southbound I-35 closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Southbound I-35 to eastbound I-235 closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Thursday, Sept. 3 

  • Southbound University on-ramp closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. 
  • Southbound I-35/I-80 to westbound I-80 ramp closed from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m.

Friday, Sept. 4

  • Westbound I-235 to southbound I-35 closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. 
  • Northbound I-35 to westbound I-235/I-80 closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
