ONAWA, Iowa — Sept. 30, 2026 — The Iowa 175 bridge over Interstate 29 in Onawa was struck earlier this week, and crews need to perform a detailed inspection of the bridge and make any necessary repairs.
Beginning at 9 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, weather permitting, mainline southbound and northbound I-29 will be closed for approximately two hours each; only one direction closed at a time. Closures will start with southbound I-29, followed by northbound I-29, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s District 3 Office.
I-29 traffic will be diverted to use the on- and off-ramps during the mainline closures. Flaggers will direct drivers through the area.

The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
