GRIMES, Iowa – Jan. 6, 2026 – If you drive on Interstate 35/I-80 between the Southwest Mixmaster and Iowa 141 you need to be aware of overnight road closures that may slow down your trip, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Grimes Construction office.
Northbound I-35/I-80 was closed to traffic from 10 p.m. until 4 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 4 and Monday, Jan. 5. It will also be closed for that same time on Tuesday, Jan. 6, weather permitting.
The University Avenue on-ramp was expected to open on the morning of Tuesday, Jan. 6 or Wednesday, Jan. 7, but that is delayed and will not open as previously announced. As the crews have reconfigured the I-235 and I-80 ramps that lead to northbound I-35/I-80 this week, it has created unforeseen traffic issues in this area. These issues need to be resolved prior to opening the University ramp. If traffic issues cannot be alleviated, then the University ramp will open with the completion of the Walnut Creek Bridge in April.
When I-80/I-35 is closed, you will follow a marked detour route that uses I-235, 100th Street, NW Urbandale Drive, and I-80/I-35.

The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
