Overnight Closures of Southbound I-35/Westbound I-80 scheduled for March 5 and March 8 - 13

GRIMES, Iowa – March 4, 2026 – If you drive on Interstate 35/I-80 between the Southwest Mixmaster and Iowa 141 you need to be aware of overnight road closures that may slow down your trip, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Grimes Construction office.

Our construction crew needs to reconfigure the southbound I-35/westbound I-80 lanes of traffic by shifting the travel lanes to the west. Work will be taking place in the middle of the interstate this year; the work includes reconstructing the pavement and replacing the existing bridge in the center of U.S. 6/Hickman Road. The following closures are planned to implement the new traffic shift:

  • Southbound I-35/westbound I-80 Douglas Avenue on-ramps and the U.S. 6/Hickman Road off-ramp will be closed, as well as a right lane closure of the interstate, on March 5 from 10 p.m. – 4 a.m.

  • Southbound I-35/westbound I-80 will be closed to traffic March 8-13 from 10 p.m. – 4 a.m. Backup dates if weather is an issue will be the following week on March 15 – 20.

The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
