Contract ID | Number used to identify projects by the Office of Contracts. Contract ID is derived from the Project Number. An example is shown below: Project Number: IM-234-5(678)9--13-11 Contract ID: 11-2345-678 11 - 2-digit county number 234 - 3-digit route number 5 - single-digit federal control section number 678 - 3-digit paren number representing a chronological sequence of the assignment of projects on a given route and control section. Note: All portions of the Contract ID must contain the appropriate number of significant digits. Include 0s preceding the numbers as needed. For example, the route number for Highway 20 is 020. |
Design Clear Zone Distance | This is the width of clear zone that should be provided along a given roadway. This distance is based on traffic speeds, traffic volumes, horizontal curvature, and roadside geometry. |
Design Exception | A written document used to explain the need to vary from national design standards. Refer to Section 1C-1. |

FHWA Oversight Agreement | An agreement between the Iowa DOT and the Federal Highway Administration that ensures the federal highway program is delivered consistent with laws, regulations and policies. |

IBC β International Building Code | International Code Council publication that contains codes used to construct residential and commercial buildings. |
MasterWorks | Computer program used to track DOT projects. |
Median Crossover | Paved median area used to divert traffic across the median of a divided highway. Primarily used during construction staging or in transition to an undivided roadway |
Median Opening | Paved median area allowing for left turn access on expressways. |
MUTCD β Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices | This manual contains the basic principles, guidance and standards that control the design, placement, maintenance and uniformity of traffic signs for all streets and highways open to the public. Use of MUTCD is required by both federal regulations and Iowa Administrative Code. Iowa DOT currently uses the 2009 MUTCD except for exceptions noted in the Administrative Rule Chapter 761, Chapter 130.1 (1). |
OSHA β Occupational Safety & Health Administration | Agency created to help prevent work-related injuries, illnesses, and deaths. |
Paren Number | Number appearing inside parentheses. Usually associated with Project Numbers. |
PDF β Portable Document Format | Commonly used file format for storing images which can be viewed in Adobe Acrobat Reader. |
PIN β Program Improvement Number | Number used to identify a segment of roadway that has been entered into the Five Year Program. An example is shown below: PIN: 07-85-020-010-02 07 2-digit year the segment entered the Five Year Program 85 - 2-digit county number 020 - 3-digit route number 010 - 3-digit number representing a unique sequence of the assignment of segments in a given county and route 02 2-digit section number representing a subdivision of a segment into smaller pieces. This portion of the PIN may or may not exist depending on if a segment needs to be sub- divided or not. Note: All portions of the PIN must contain the appropriate number of significant digits. Include 0s preceding the numbers as needed. For example, the route number for Highway 20 is 020. |
PMT β Project Management Team | The team charged with developing a design project. The team includes district staff, central office staff and possibly local representatives. |
PPMs β Policy and Procedures Manual | Manual of Iowa DOT policies and procedures available at DOT Policies and Procedures |
Project Constraints | A factor that will limit the implementation of design criteria set forth by the Iowa DOT. |
Project Directory Number | Number used to name CADD project folders located in ProjectWise under PWMain\Documents\Projects\. The project directory number is derived from a projectβs PIN. An example is shown below: PIN: 07-85-020-010 Project directory number: 8502001007 07 - 2-digit year the segment entered the Five Year Program 85 - 2-digit county number 020 - 3-digit route number 010 - 3-digit number representing a unique sequence of the assignment of segments in a given county and route Note: If a PIN includes a section number, this is not reflected in the project directory number. All portions of the project directory number must contain the appropriate number of significant digits. Include 0s preceding the numbers as needed. For example, the route number for Highway 20 is 020. |
Project Number | Number used to identify a project from concept through construction. An example is shown below. For more information see Policies and Procedures Manual PPM 130.01. Provided Clear Zone Distance | This is a measure of the actual clear zone width that is available along a given roadway. This distance is measured from the edge of traveled way out to the face of the nearest obstacle. The provided clear-zone distance should be equal to or greater than the design clear-zone distance. |
